Ethiopia is no longer subject to any arms embargo. 

Prohibitions 

Between May 2000 and May 2001, the UN enforced an arms embargo which prohibited the sale or supply of arms and related materiel to Ethiopia, as well as the provision of technical assistance or training related to these items. 

Exceptions 

Requiring prior approval from the UN Sanctions Committee on Eritrea and Ethiopia: 

  • Non-lethal military equipment when these items were solely intended for humanitarian use (Resolution 1298 (2000), para. 7).

Ethiopia was also under EU arms embargo. 

EU

Ethiopia is no longer subject to any arms embargo. 

Prohibitions 

Between March 1999 and May 2001, the EU enforced an arms embargo against Ethiopia which prohibited It prohibits any sale or supply of arms, munitions and military equipment to Ethiopia. More specifically, the prohibitions covered weapons designed to kill and their ammunition, weapon platforms, non-weapon platforms and ancillary equipment, as well as spare parts, repairs, maintenance and transfer of military technology. 

Exceptions 

Requiring no prior approval from or notification to the UN Sanctions Committee on Eritrea and Ethiopia: 

  • Contracts related to the prohibited items which were signed before the EU arms embargo entered into force (Common Position 1999/206/CFSP, art. 1).
